This week Offensive Security information security training and certification provider announced the acquisition of VulnHub, an open-source repository of security training tools.
Offensive Safety, headquartered in New York City and operating since 2007, offers safety advice and training including penetration testing and digital forensics. The company is also known for developing Kali Linux, as well as the Exploit Database and Unleashed Metasploit projects.
VulnHub was created in 2012 and lets people improve digital security and learn new skills by allowing them to easily set up private laboratories where they can train. The VulnHub platform is used for training purposes by the states, schools , and universities.
The open-source platform comprises a range of IT properties that are intended to be legally hackable and exploitable. In a controlled environment, experts can then use their penetration testing skills.
The new acquisition, says OffSec, is consistent with its focus on delivering realistic training content to all those who want to become professionals in the field of cyber security.
“With the backing from OffSec, VulnHub now has the opportunity to grow to its full potential. As before, we hope the community will continue to come together to help each other know, either by making new material or by offering walkthroughs or solutions, “says the company.
Following the acquisition, OffSec will continue to provide the content of VulnHub free of charge, in line with the firm’s commitment to open source.
In addition , the company plans to offer more open source tools to security professionals seeking practical experience, including the above-mentioned Kali Linux, Exploit DB, and Unleashed Metasploit.
“We will work over time towards expanding the services available on VulnHub and integrating them with OffSec products. The aim of any reforms will be to extend exposure to training tools for information security to as many people as possible, “the firm said.
