A text box is a simple and efficient technique to visually organize your thoughts or distinguish a group of text on a page. Text boxes can also help your document appear more formal and professional, which is useful if you’re sharing it with others.
In Google Docs, inserting text boxes isn’t as obvious as it is in other word editing tools. Fortunately, there are a couple simple ways to add a text box to a Google Docs document. Text boxes let you to insert text or images and then move them around, between, and within documents.
In Google Docs, How Do I Insert a Text Box?
In Google Docs, there are at least two ways to add a text box. The drawing tool and a single cell table are the two most common techniques, although each has its own set of layout and formatting options.
Using the Drawing Tool, create a text box in Google Docs.
Although the drawing tool isn’t the most intuitive way to add a text box to a document, it’s still simple to use and allows you to alter text boxes all throughout the document.
You can upload the drawing as an image to Google Drive and add it to your document using the drawing tool. You can also use different shapes, line styles, callouts, and arrows in your design. It creates a dialogue box in your document where you may use the drawing tool’s commands to create, edit, and format shapes and text fields.
Using the drawing tool, create a text box:
- To create a text box, open your document and go to Insert > Drawing, then New.
- Select the Text box icon from the drop-down menu.
Click and drag in the drawing area to create the text box, then release the mouse to see the text box appear. Add text and edit the text box as desired, then click the blue Save & Close button in the top right corner of the drawing area when finished.

Rectangles, squares, callouts, flowchart forms, and other shapes can be added to your page. As with a text box, Google Docs allows you to put text in various shapes and edit them by changing the border line width or adding background colors.
- After that, go to Insert > Drawing > New and select the Shapes command.

You can adjust objects that overlap one another to Bring forward or Send backward to get the appropriate ordering. To reposition text boxes or shapes in the Drawing dialogue box, right-click the text box or shape, hover your mouse over Order, then click to select an ordering option.
Using a Single Cell Table to Insert a Text Box in Google Docs
A single cell table with one column and one row can be used to enter and edit a text box in Google Docs. To do so, go to Insert > Table and select a single cell (11) with one row and one column.
On the document, the single cell will display. You can change the text box’s length and width to fit your needs, then type your text into the cell.

In Google Docs, how can you insert images inside a text box or a shape?
- In Google Docs, you can add a picture to your text box or shape, or you may overlay the image with text if you wish.
- To add an image to your text box or shape, follow these steps:
- To open the Drawing tool, click on the text box or shape, then click Edit.
- On the menu, select the Image icon.
You can add a picture by uploading it from your computer, or by adding it from a URL, your albums, Google Drive, or a Google search. To insert the image, click Select.
You’ll need to utilize a text box to overlay text on top of an image or object. To return to the drawing area, click on the text box you drew and pick Edit from the menu underneath.
- To set the transparency for the text box, click the Text box icon and then alter the fill colour. To enter the text box into your image, press Save and Close.
