Best Green Screen Apps for Your Smartphone

Do you want to be a part of the green screen craze? Then, take a look at these smartphone applications.

Recently, it has become nearly impossible to scroll through social media for an extended period without coming across a post that has been edited with green screen technology. You understand what we’re talking about, whether it’s a meme, an educational video, or an aesthetically pleasing edit.

If you’re curious about how people manage to do this, even on their mobile devices, you’ve come to the right place. The four best smartphone apps for green screen editing will be shared with you, and we’ll show you how to use them in the following section. It’s less complicated than you might think because these apps do most of the heavy lifting for you.

What Is Green Screen Editing and How Does It Work?

Smartphone with a green screen

You’re probably already familiar with the concept of a green screen in film and television production. We picture someone sitting in front of a green sheet in a recording studio most of the time. Green screen editing, on the other hand, is a little different. Green screen editing is comprised of two distinct components.

A green screen can be created by isolating the subject in an existing image or video, then removing the background and replacing it with green. If you want to go old school, you can photograph the subject in front of a natural green sheet, typically how mobile editors do it.

The second method is to use the green screen images or videos that you’ve created as overlays on other images and videos that you’ve already created. After that, editors will perform a process known as “keying,” which removes the green background from the image.

Getting Things Started

Suppose you want to create a green screen out of an existing image or video. In that case, the image or video must be of high quality—unless you don’t mind the edges of the subject being craggy or parts of the background still visible, the subject must be the same size as the green screen.

It is not required to be green all of the time. Because it is the least likely color to appear in an image or video, the color green is displayed in high contrast. While the subject may wear a green sweater, you should use a different color to complement it, such as a bright pink or royal blue, or any other color not worn by the subject.

If you’re not confident in your ability to create your green screens and are only interested in learning how to use them, you’ll most likely use green screens created by other people. This makes it critical to ensure that you have permission before proceeding. If you have permission, always credit the original creator if you plan to share your final product.

Let’s get right to the point: what are the four best smartphone apps for green screen editing?

The second most powerful app for green screen editing is Video Star.

This one is specifically for iPhone users. The Video Star mobile video editing app is often referred to as “After Effects for smartphones” due to its exceptional capabilities. Furthermore, as you might expect, it includes some advanced green screen features.

Check out our in-depth tutorials on how to create green screens and use green screens on Video Star for more information. Then, we’ll go over the fundamentals quickly…

The Erase masking feature in the Multi-Layer window will be used to create a green screen, which you can see in the image below. From there, you can auto-mask the subject and make further edits to remove any imperfections that may have occurred.

Using the Color masking feature in the Multi-Layer window on Video Star, you’ll be able to create a green screen in the program. Remove the color of your choice, and you’ll have the option to modify the removal.

When using the green screen features on Video Star, you will be prompted to purchase one or a few packs of green screen films to use them. Alternatively, you can subscribe to the Pro plan, which grants you access to all of the app’s features.

PicsArt is the most helpful app for creating green screen images.

The apps listed above are capable of editing both green screen videos and images. We’ve got you covered with our list of top choices for those looking for a specific image editing app that can also perform green screen edits.

PicturePicsArt is one of our favorite image editing mobile apps because of the wide variety of versatile, high-powered editing tools available in the app’s free version.

To create green screens in PicsArt, follow these steps:

  • Select a solid green color from the templates in the app once it is launched.
  • Once you’ve arrived at the editing window, click on Add Photo. Choose a picture from your library that you want to use as a green screen for your project.
  • Once that’s done, either manually removes any unnecessary background elements and isolate your subject, or locate and select the
  • Cutout tools at the bottom to have the app do it for you will be displayed on your screen.
  • When you’re finished, click Apply.
  • It is now necessary to place the subject on top of the first layer, the green background that we imported in the previous step.
  • You can export this green screen image from here, which you can then import and use in other applications.

PicsArt does not have a color masking feature that can be used to remove the green background from a green screen image; however, importing green screen images into PicsArt is pointless in most cases anyway. This is because you have the Cutout and Eraser tools to remove any background and position the subject over whatever you’ve imported to the first layer of the document.

Chromavid: The Most Effective Real-Time Green Screen Application

These instructions are for those who have a green screen installation. It’s not nearly as complicated as it sounds; all you need is a flat material in a solid color to get started (this will act as the green screen sheet).

Chromavid is a green screen production company that combines traditional green screen filming with green screen editing. Real-time allows you to film a subject in front of a coloured screen (either green, blue, red, or yellow) and have the background replaced with an image of your choice. You can choose from a selection of stock-free images available in the app or use an image from your collection.

To film with a green screen on Chromavid, follow these steps:

  • After launching the app, select a color by tapping the coloured dot in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • Then, tap the pictures icon in the bottom-left corner to select an image, which you can then crop if necessary.
  • When you place the subject in front of your coloured sheet and press the Record button, the camera automatically switches to landscape mode. We used a beloved Lego friend as an example in this section.
  • Once you’ve finished recording, you’ll be taken to a window where you can view the finished product, share it with others, or save it to your device’s memory.
  • Your video will be watermarked if you use Chromavid, which is the only drawback to using this software. If you purchase a subscription for only $2.99 per year, the watermark will be removed, and there will be a more excellent selection of default images available for you to use.

For Android and iOS, you can get Chromavid (Free, subscription available)
